PUTTING MAJOR BRANDS TO THE FIRE.

This blog is focused on major brand campaigns, mainly in the television media. As new campaigns are introduced by major brands the goal is to evaluate the work in light of the brand personality and history. We’ll try to determine the brand strategy, the target, the message and the desired response.

This will be an objective view with no agency insights on strategy or how the work was produced or its effectiveness. It will strictly be an effort to see if by evaluating the finished work the strategy can be discovered / realized. This will not be associated or driven by any agency or company press releases about the work (where the strategy and the goal are usually identified.) This will be a simple pure evaluation of the work based strictly on initial perceptions and reaction to the campaign/s as they air.

Missing the obvious with Captain Obvious.

When a brand doesn’t carry the campaign through each customer touchpoint it can be an obvious missed opportunity. Something I’ve seen many times over the years is when a brand overlooks an obvious opportunity to reinforce a campaign concept in multiple media outlets. I’ve been noticing that the Captain Obvious campaign for hotels.com has allowed this to happen. This very clever character in a well produced television campaign has not been carried over into other media. Why not? When people start to connect with a character and recognize its look and language they may not be making the connection to who they represent. Where is my Skippy Place?

Skippy Peanut Butter is singing a new song about someplace. But where? Skippy Peanut Butter has been around for a long, long time. And like most peanut butters they have traditionally targeted a younger audience – kids. But here in the age of pandemics and being stuck indoors, Skippy has moved up the age level to the 20 somethings. Which, it would seem, would be a smart move. Please don’t mess with Jake from State Farm. Is it just me or does anyone else notice that highly successful campaigns make it very hard for clients to move on to something new?
